During my hours of travel over the summer, I’ve been editing images of paintings that I’ve done over the last two years at Ecclesia and translating them into a digital form, creating a series of posters based on some of our core values as a community. I posted them on Society6 which is a great site for artists to post their work and translate them into products. Along with the posters, I created corresponding images that could be put on a t-shirt.
Here’s what I made….
“Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.”
2 Kings 5:13-14
““Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare. ”
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.”
“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
“Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.”
I wanted to work on this project because of the vast amount of images I have created over the last two years. Every Sunday that I paint I’m basically creating new imagery based on the Bible…. and over time that turns out to be a lot (as you can see through this blog).
Art in the church is a tricky thing (for a number of reasons)…. and mostly if the church uses any visual expression, it draws upon classic realism created hundreds of years ago. Although I love these images as well, I’m constantly asking “How are we translating the story of scripture into our modern context? After a pop and digital revolution? After the rise of street art and graffitti…. what does it look like for our society to translate these stories visually?
That is some of the work I do here at Ecclesia.
This poster project was a way for me to pause, look through images I created, touch them up and put them out there for everyone to use and enjoy.
So here’s my offering to the larger conversation. Here’s images relating to what God is teaching us and where we are going as a community.
What are you bringing?(all proceeds from sales are going to the Ecclesia Building Fund as we try to be obedient into the new city space that the Almighty is calling us into. thanks for your support!)
